When I was younger I was into Beverly Hills, 90210 but I was never interested in Melrose Place. Let's make it clear that I was a mere baby when both shows aired but sometimes when we are young, we watch shows we have no business watching! I also have to be clear that I don't have much to compare from the old to the 2009 season premiere of Melrose Place. From what I watched this past Tuesday, the show did not pique my interest or engage me. I felt disconnected to the story line and all the characters. Most of the young adults watching the show have no clue about the original cast members. What was the relation of Heather Locklear, Kristin Davis, Daphne Zuniga and others.
I felt disconnected from the beginning of the season premiere. The characters were not introduced formally or informally...and honestly, what is the whole Sydney story line? Who the hell is she and what are connections to all the cast? Especially Violet (Ashlee Simpson Wentz) to make her steal her picture at the end of the show and stuff it in her bag! Is she connected to one of the original castmates? I just think the set-up was horrible and the pay-off is bound to be a hot mess! Everyone seemed to hate Sydney and it was probably the cause in the original Melrose.
I do remember hearing that death was a major part of the original show! These characters all seem so goody and they couldn't hurt a fly. There is no apparent bad boy? Who is the girl that everyone loves and wants piece of? Who is the jealous bitch that must sabotage everyone's happiness so she can feel good about herself? Who is the misguided soul that is a druggie and alcoholic? Every good drama has one of these in some form and I didn't get that feeling from anyone. The show is doomed from the first episode because the set-up did not explain anything at all. We get a glimpse into the professional lives of these characters but nothing else that makes me want to come back for more.
But there is a strong possibility I will watch the show until it gets canceled. If this show survives and gets picked up for a second season, I will be truly shocked. Why would they put this show on the air when there was a perfectly good show last season by the name of Privileged. I loved the show and it had potential but the marketing team for this show did not give the show the support it needed. I miss this show but not all shows make it.
What can save Melrose Place this season? 1.) Making a stronger connection of all the characters and their relation to the original cast members? 2.) Establishing a new identity and appeal from the original show. 3.) If they are going to pick-up where the original left off, there is some explaining to do do! 4.) Interesting, love and hate story lines. 5.) Acting lessons for Ashlee Simpson Wentz 6.) More diversity as always 7.) Expansion of lesbo story line.
Until next week...
P.S.: Can we put entertainment back into TV and movies? What are your thoughts on the lack of entertainment in most TV programs over the last 5-7yrs?
